Some quick thanks

So the deed is done, the destination is deserted and the design has disappeared.  Until next year that is.  Closing the doors on the Old Fire Station with over 4,500 visitors at that venue alone, this year’s Bristol Design Festival was by far the biggest, and most certainly the best.  As I am sure that [...]

Same same…but very different

Image found here
Back in March Bristol’s best graffiti artists, designers and illustrators vied for the chance to be given one of 26 sets of pure, white, unadulterated Russian Nesting Dolls to customise at their will.
The products of the fertile imaginations of the likes of Cheba, Heidi Gough, and Mr Jago can now be seen at [...]

Keeping the Doors Open

Jamaica Studios describes itself as Stokes Croft cultural heart and houses a diverse bunch of illustrators, artists, textile designers and even an embroiderer tucked away in its rabbit warren of white cubes (admittedly white cubes with a fantastic view and great natural light to work in).

But now continued operations are under threat and they need [...]

A new kind of fire in the station this Sunday

Having spent the early throws of Sunday morning nursing the effects of a few drinks too many the previous evening, the BDF exhibition at the old Fire station was entering it’s third day showcasing some fantastic and diverse work; which incidentally turned out to be the best hangover cure I’ve come across for a good [...]

Painting for the next generation

Upfest is an event to showcase the best in up-and-coming talented painters, showing us that an awful lot more can be done with paints than the chocolate-box country cottage watercolour. An event that was a 24 hours of painting across Bristol, I went to the big event at the Tobacco Factory. Walking into the achingly [...]

Tensile Strength – A Social and Political Paper Trail

Tensile Strength – The Power of Paper is viewable daily 10am – 5pm at Bristol’s City Museum & Art Gallery on the Top Floor.

I’m a sucker for those 1940s wartime instructional posters so I was keen to see what The Power of Paper had to offer. And with over 45 pieces of paper [...]

Lost, Found, Bejewelled, Gorgeous!

Open daily at Diana Porter, Park Street
If you’re anything like me, finding yourself unaccountably drawn to anything up-cycled, then get yourself along to the Lost and Found exhibition at Diana Porter.
I love the idea behind up-cycling, giving new life to old objects and actually improving on them while retaining their past significance.
The pieces on display [...]

It’s all about the numbers…

It is always a real challenge to try and quantify the success of an exhibition launch. Do you rank its performance on the amount of visitors? The press coverage? The alcohol consumption? Last night the Bristol Design Festival held its launch party at the Old Fire Station, complete with competitions, prizes, speeches, wine, nibbles, music, and everyone seemingly enjoying themselves. To summarise the launch though, let’s look at a few numbers…

BDF launch party goes with a bang!

Well what a great evening – the launch party kicked off at 6pm with talks from Professor Paul Gough and entrepreneur and ace designer, Rob Law of Trunki – before the winners of the Grafikea competition and the best 2D and 3D exhibits in show were announced.  We grabbed a quick chat with Rob and [...]
